Date Night

Steve Carell. Tina Fey.  Undoubtedly two of the hottest comedians out right now, Fey and Carell team up in this action comedy to mark their first movie together.  While I personally thought this was a good "date movie," I had flashbacks to the mediocre Get Smart (2008) that had Steve Carell first showing his comedic timing in an action packed thriller.  Fast forward to 2010 and this is the same story, albeit with a funnier script and funnier supporting cast with the likes of Ray Liotta, William Fichtner, Mila Kunis, James Franco, and Mark Wahlberg.

First, let me say this movie is saved solely based off the great performances of Fey and Carell.  Dry deadpan humor from their respective shows, 30 Rock and The Office, translate well to the big screen (stay for the outtakes at the end, CLASSIC).  I think, in all, what makes this movie a success is that it is not trying to take itself too seriously.  I mean, it provides what you seek... a great date movie for a date night.  My only beef is that the trailer gives away a lot of the good lines, which I guess makes sense, but the producers of movies should keep at least SOME of the best lines out of the trailer just to make it fun when you first see it.  This seems to be a theme in movies now, and I guess it has to do with the majority of movies being really awful (ahem... Step Up 3D anyone?).  But that's a discussion for another time.

All in all, 3 out of 4 stars, or 7 out of 10, or whatever other ambiguous rating system you can think of.
Bottom line: grab your significant other, a box of popcorn, and enjoy a date night with Steve Carell and Tina Fey.
